Hi, my name is Max van de Laar

At UTURN, I led the software engineering department and helped standardise technologies and delivery processes across teams. I was responsible for IT strategy, scalability, compliance, and team effectiveness, experience that now allows me to support clients as a freelance CTO or technical lead.

At Superscript, I was responsible for the user interface of internal and customer-facing software products, working closely with stakeholders, UX, and back-end engineers. This strengthened my ability to align product, design, and engineering in fast-moving client environments.

I founded and developed the Homey Community Store, an alternative app store for the Homey automation platform. The project combined product thinking, platform ownership, technical decision-making, and community-driven execution.

As a software consultant, I helped customers shape and build tailored software solutions that matched their business case. I combined requirements discovery, product development, and commercial awareness, which is directly relevant in freelance and advisory roles.

At NLcom, I worked end-to-end on custom software projects, from pre-sales and requirements discovery to roadmap definition, delivery, and ongoing customer collaboration. This built a strong foundation for working independently with clients and taking ownership from strategy to implementation.

Drukwerkdeal migrated its legacy PHP codebase to AWS Lambda with NodeJS. I joined as Lead Back-end Engineer for the Finance team, led the transition, and coached the other developer to write NodeJS code with confidence and consistency.

At Philips, I worked as Lead Front-end Engineer on the customer-facing side of a medical device. Due to NDA restrictions, I cannot share additional details, but the work demanded a strong focus on quality, reliability, and careful technical execution.

After my LG WebOS+ app for the Athom Homey platform was rejected from the official store, I worked with the community to create the Homey Community Store as an alternative app store. The platform was built with Vue 3 and AWS serverless architecture.

The customer had an existing WordPress website and, because the rest of their digital estate was managed in Liferay, we proposed migrating this site as well. I led a two-developer team, reverse engineered the old site, set up the core structure, and mentored a junior developer while safeguarding delivery quality.

The customer wanted to rebuild legacy custom applications: a web app and a mobile app used by independent electrical inspectors to assess whether installations met legal standards. I worked in a team of four developers, managed the customer relationship, acted as project manager, and later became lead developer to help maintain quality while the product evolved.

The customer needed to assess a high volume of new employees for subsidy eligibility under social legislation. I first mapped the business flow with the customer, then extended the existing BPMN suite to fit the process and integrate with healthcare and HR systems, resulting in a successful recruitment automation tool.
